Giants waive former first-round pick Ereck Flowers

Ereck Flowers

The New York Giants began the process of phasing Ereck Flowers out of their offense earlier this season, and they are officially cutting ties with the former first-round pick.

On Tuesday, the Giants announced that they have placed Flowers on waivers.

While they would have preferred to trade Flowers, there was likely no market for a player who has performed so poorly he was benched after just two games this season. Flowers was moved to right tackle from left tackle prior to being benched to make room for Nate Solder, who signed a four-year, $62 million contract with the team. The 24-year-old was unhappy with the move and skipped the start of the team’s offseason program.

While the Giants have had plenty of issues beyond Flowers on offense, the former first-round pick has had a target on his back since early last season. Since he had so much potential at one point and is still young, it would be a surprise if a team doesn’t take a chance on him.
