Janay Rice: I would not have apologized without Ravens suggestion

Ray Rice girlfriend fiancee Janay Palmer

Janay Palmer, the wife of NFL running back Ray Rice, says she would not have issued a public apology for her involvement in the domestic violence incident that took place in February if the Baltimore Ravens did not suggest it.

During the first part of her interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer, Palmer confirmed what she wrote in her ESPN essay — that the Ravens gave her and Ray a “suggested script” which included an apology from her.

“I was basically, not doing what I was told, but at the same time I didn’t think it was completely wrong for me to apologize, because at the end of the day, I got arrested too,” Palmer told Lauer. “I did something wrong too. Not taking any light off what Ray did because I agree with everybody else, it was wrong.”

While Palmer said that the Ravens did not tell her exactly what to say, she openly admitted that the apology was the team’s idea. When asked specifically by Lauer if she would have been involved in the press conference or apologized without the Ravens’ suggestion, Palmer said, “No, no.”

Palmer also confirmed that the story Rice told Roger Goodell and company about what happened inside the elevator was in no way “ambiguous,” contrary to what Goodell said previously.

“I can’t say (Goodell is) telling the truth,” she said. “I know for a fact that he told … that Ray told the honest truth that he’s been telling from February.”

Rice has looked really, really bad throughout this entire ordeal. Some would argue that Goodell and the NFL have looked worse.
