New York Jets legend Nick Mangold has died.

The Jets announced on Sunday that Mangold died Saturday night following complications from kidney disease. The former offensive lineman was 41.

“Nick was more than a legendary center,” Jets owner Woody Johnson said in a statement. “He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”

Mangold revealed on Oct. 14 that he was in need of a kidney transplant. The former All-Pro center said he had been diagnosed with a genetic defect in 2006 that had led to chronic kidney disease, and his kidney was failing sooner than expected. Mangold said there were no members of his family who were eligible to donate a kidney, so he was asking fans for help.

Mangold was one of the most popular players in Jets franchise history. He played for the team for his entire 11-NFL career from 2006-2016. New York drafted Mangold in the first round out of Ohio State, where he was an All-American.

Mangold’s seven Pro Bowl selections are the second-most all time for the Jets behind only fellow former offensive lineman Winston Hill, who had eight. Mangold was also named a First-team All-Pro twice. He was inducted into the New York Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022.
