Did the New York Jets’ decision to part ways with Aaron Rodgers come from the top? Not according to owner Woody Johnson.

Johnson revealed Monday that the decision to part ways with Rodgers came from coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey. Johnson did add, however, that he felt they had made the right call to go in a different direction.

“The experiment was a good experiment, it just didn’t work out,” Johnson said. “I have a lot of respect for Aaron Rodgers and I’m sorry it didn’t work out but we had to make a choice. And I think we made the right choice.”

Reports emerged last season that Johnson wanted to bench Rodgers, but was overruled by the team’s coaching staff. As such, there were some assumptions that Johnson would be the one to ultimately cut the quarterback’s time with the team short. Johnson insisted all along, however, that his new coach and GM would be the ones to make the decision.

Rodgers threw for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season, but looked shaky at times as the Jets went 5-12. It certainly seemed that the marriage had run its course, and it was not a huge shock that the Jets moved on and got much younger at the position in free agency.
