Report: Jets preparing for possible fire sale ahead of trade deadline

The New York Jets entered Week 6 with a 0-4 record and a roster that is nowhere near playoff contention, and things could get a lot worse before they get better.

People around the NFL expect the Jets to be “extremely active” before the Oct. 29 trade deadline, SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano reports. One source told Vacchiano that he would not be surprised if the Jets hold a fire sale due to the fact that they have a new general manager in Joe Douglas and a number of talented players on the roster that Douglas doesn’t view as fits for his long-term vision.

“Most of that team was built by Mike (former Jets GM Mike Maccagnan),” the source said. “This isn’t Joe’s team yet. He’s going to have to unload some of those guys and start loading up on (draft) picks.”

Leonard Williams is one name that seems to keep coming up, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday that multiple teams have expressed interest in the defensive end. Williams, a former No. 6 overall pick, is having a solid season and ranks eighth in the NFL with 88 quarterback hits since he entered the league back in 2015. While the Jets have apparently told teams they are not interested in dealing Williams, he is in the final year of his contract and would likely fetch a decent draft pick or two.

The Jets could also consider moving Le’Veon Bell, who signed a four-year, $52.5 million contract with the team this past offseason. Another one of their star players has expressed frustration with the Jets in recent weeks, but it would be a surprise if they traded him.
