Jets reportedly using RG3 as leverage against Ryan Fitzpatrick

Robert Griffin III is reportedly being used by the Jets to make Ryan Fitzpatrick jealous.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the Jets would prefer re-signing Fitzpatrick to adding Griffin, and the former Washington quarterback’s Friday visit was likely meant as leverage from the Jets’ perspective, though they are keeping their options open in case Fitzpatrick leaves.

Don’t think that Griffin doesn’t know that. Mehta says that RG3 wants to check out the lay of the land as much as possible, so he was pleased to take a visit to New York, even if he’s not at the top of their list.

Fitzpatrick’s options seem to be dwindling. The Denver Broncos and Cleveland Browns, two of the three other teams with major quarterback needs, appear to be prioritizing a Colin Kaepernick trade. Mehta reports that the other team with an opening, the Los Angeles Rams, aren’t willing to pay a high premium for Fitzpatrick either.

The Jets have reportedly offered Fitzpatrick significantly less than the going rate for starting quarterbacks with the belief that nobody else will meet his asking price. Recall that the Broncos reportedly used that tactic when negotiating with Brock Osweiler, and we saw how that worked out for them.
