Report: Joe Philbin wanted Dolphins to draft Derek Carr, get rid of Ryan Tannehill
Former Dolphins coach Joe Philbin was not a big Ryan Tannehill fan, according to a new report.
According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, Philbin was never comfortable with Tannehill as his quarterback, and pushed for the team to select Derek Carr in the 2014 draft instead of sticking with Tannehill.
The issues reportedly started in 2013, when there were tensions between Philbin and then-GM Jeff Ireland. Ireland was fired, and owner Stephen Ross also considered letting go of offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, whom Philbin did not want axed.
Philbin responded by pinning the blame for poor offense on the players, particularly Tannehill. In 2014, he unsuccessfully pushed for Carr to be drafted in the first round. Philbin even reportedly resented the hiring of Dan Marino as a special advisor, as the legendary quarterback got too close to Tannehill for his liking.
Philbin was fired in October, and according to Salguero, the hiring of new coach Adam Gase is in no small part because the franchise believes he can take Tannehill to the next level.
We knew that the Dolphins’ executives viewed Tannehill as a potential franchise quarterback, and the coaching staff disagreed. However, the two parties being this much at odds is new. Perhaps Philbin and Miko Grimes can get together to rant about the Miami quarterback.
