Jonathan Martin reportedly had gun when detained by police
Jonathan Martin had a gun in his possession when he was detained by police, according to a report.
TMZ Sports says police believe Martin had recently purchased two weapons, including one that matched with the gun seen in his Instagram post. When he was found on Friday, he had a gun in his car.
TMZ Sports also says that Martin is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.
Martin made a threatening post on his Instagram story last week that showed a photo of a gun with several bullets around it. The post specifically called out a few of Martin’s former NFL teammates, as well as his high school. The threatening post, issued just over a week after a high school shooting in Parkland, Fla., was enough to make the school close down on Friday out of precaution. Martin was taken into custody, and the police were investigating the matter.
Martin played at Stanford before joining the NFL in 2012 as a second-round pick by the Dolphins. The former offensive lineman was at the center of a 2013 bullying scandal with Miami that led to Richie Incognito’s eventual suspension.
Martin retired from the NFL in 2015 and soon thereafter opened up about his struggles with suicidal thoughts.
