Josh McCown responds to fan chants for Johnny Manziel
Josh McCown’s stats were pretty but the team’s result was not on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.
McCown threw for 341 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a 27-20 loss at home in Week 3. McCown was making his first start since being knocked out of a Week 1 loss to the Jets with a concussion, a game in which he was replaced by Johnny Manziel. Though Manziel did not fare well against the Jets, he helped the team to victory in Week 2 against the Titans, creating a quarterback controversy in Cleveland.
The Browns elected to start McCown, who did not play well as the team fell behind 20-3 before he finally started to rally them late in the third and fourth quarters. He was asked after the game about some of the fan chants for Manziel.
“I understand it,” McCown said via the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot. “He’s an exciting young player. You have to block it out.”
Though some fans would like to see Manziel play especially after he came up clutch in the Week 2 win, McCown’s finish in the Raiders game will probably buy him at least another start or two. But we should remember that head coach Mike Pettine was considering starting Manziel in Week 3, so the coaches might think about it again.
Oh, and we also have to include this from Pettine:
#Browns HC Mike Pettine said he told team he's tired of players talking about being good and failing to back it up.
