Report: Josh McDaniels has not informed Patriots he is leaving

Josh McDaniels

It has been widely reported that the New England Patriots will lose both of their coordinators after the Super Bowl, but apparently one of those two coaches has not officially informed the team that he will take another job.

As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk notes, it was reported on the NBC Super Bowl pregame show that McDaniels has not yet told the Patriots he will leave to take the head coaching job with the Indianapolis Colts. Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia has already confirmed that he will become the next head coach of the Detroit Lions.

McDaniels is said to have a handshake agreement in place with the Colts, but Florio feels “there’s a strange vibe that has been floating around” regarding the 41-year-old’s future plans.

It’s possible that McDaniels simply doesn’t want to be a distraction to the Patriots as they prepare for the Super Bowl, so he could be waiting to have an “official” discussion with Bill Belichick and the team after the championship game. The belief is still that he is going to take the job, and he would only hurt his reputation if he strung the Colts along.

With the latest reports we have heard about Andrew Luck’s health, it makes sense that McDaniels would want to coach the Colts and try to prove he has learned a lot since his first head coaching job with the Denver Broncos.
