Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields needs to learn to get rid of the ball.
Fields took a whopping six sacks in Chicago’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Some of those sacks were the result of him hanging on to the ball too long. On one play in particular, Fields somehow missed two wide-open receivers and cost the Bears what would have been a touchdown.

Bears running back Roschon Johnson came out of the backfield on that play and was left completely alone due to a coverage breakdown. Fields had plenty of time to deliver the pass, but his instinct was to tuck the ball and try to run. Even if he didn’t see Johnson, he could have hit DJ Moore in the flat for an easy gain.
That was not the only sack that was entirely Fields’ fault, either.

There was a lot of talk during the offseason about Fields taking a big step forward in his third year, but we have seen no signs of that through two games. The former Ohio State star struggles with basic reads and has a run-first mentality far too often. In addition to the bad sacks, he also threw a brutal pick-six that sealed the loss for the Bears.
