Los Angeles mayor says city would have been fine with only one NFL team

Even the mayor of Los Angeles seems to be having a difficult time getting excited about the arrival of the Chargers.

In a recent interview on “The Dan Patrick Show,” L.A. mayor Eric Garcetti, who admitted that he is a fan of the Rams, was asked if the city would have been fine with just one NFL team.

“Absolutely, and I said that at the time,” said Garcetti, per Frank Schwab of Yahoo! Sports. “I said it’s great and both the Raiders and Chargers, it would’ve been nice if they could’ve stayed put where they are because Oakland and San Diego have huge fanbases. There’s a big tradition … I’m glad the Chargers will build up a fan base and it really is Southern California, but I believe in players playing for a long time on teams, and teams staying in a city for their lives.

“We embrace any team that comes, we’re certainly happy to have the Chargers in L.A.,” he added. “But I think we could’ve been happy with just one too.”

The Chargers are now 0-2 to start their first season back in Los Angeles, and even the players appear to be aware of the somewhat chilly reception they are getting. These quotes from Garcetti, who’s always been in touch with the L.A. sports scene, probably sum up how the entire city feels about having the Bolts.
