Lions fire GM Martin Mayhew and president Tom Lewand
The Detroit Lions stand virtually no chance of making the playoffs this season, and the team is wasting no time getting started on a total overhaul.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Lions have fired both team president Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew.

Mayhew had been with the Lions for 14 seasons and was given control of roster decisions more than five years ago. Lewand began serving in his most recent role in 2008.
It would stand to reason that Mayhew and Lewand had a hand in the decision to hire Jim Caldwell, so the Detroit coach may not be the last man standing for very long.
After finishing with an 11-5 record and making the playoffs last season, the Lions are arguably the NFL’s worst team at the moment. Caldwell expressed frustration with the media earlier this week when he made these fairly unwise comments, and Matthew Stafford later supported him. If the Lions are going into full organizational rebuilding mode, it seems highly unlikely that Caldwell survives into 2016.
