Matt Flynn signs contract with Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks have a new quarterback, one they’re hoping will be the franchise’s future. Matt Flynn signed a three-year contract with the team Sunday. The deal is for $10 million guaranteed and reportedly worth up to $26 million. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel says the contract is really for $19 million.

Flynn signed a few days after taking a visit to Seattle where he made his first stop as a free agent. Miami was thought to be his likely landing spot, but they were busy trying to woo Peyton Manning (who won’t sign with them), and then they brought in Alex Smith and David Garrard for visits. Flynn must have felt that Seattle wanted him more than Miami so he chose them.

The signing also seems to confirm a report from Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports a few days ago who said the Dolphins were lowballing Flynn. Given that Miami’s new head coach is Joe Philbin, Flynn’s former offensive coordinator in Green Bay, it’s pretty obvious he did not think too highly of his former quarterback.

Even if the Dolphins didn’t think too much of Flynn, I do, so I like the move for Seattle. I’ve been saying for years that the Seahawks need a new quarterback, and I’ve been especially vocal saying Tarvaris Jackson is not the answer. The Seahawks have some decent receiving weapons — especially if Sidney Rice is healthy — and they proved last year they have a good running game and defense. They have a much better chance of overtaking the 49ers in the NFC West now that they have Flynn.
