Mauricio Ortega may avoid criminal charges for memorabilia thefts

Tom Brady jersey thief

Mauricio Ortega may have stolen Tom Brady’s Super Bowl jersey and Von Miller’s Super Bowl helmet, but he could end up avoiding criminal charges for the thefts he committed.

The Brady jersey from the recent Super Bowl along with one from the 2015 Super Bowl was recovered in a search at Ortega’s home in Mexico. The AP says a deal was reached so that the victim would not press charges in exchange for the jersey’s return. It’s quite possible that the person who agreed to those terms is Brady.

The NFL may feel so embarrassed about the case that they want it all to just go away. It’s a bad look for them to have a credentialed member of the media be confirmed as a Super Bowl memorabilia thief.

But this also means Ortega, a newspaper director in Mexico, could end up avoiding prosecution in the US.
