Michael Strahan, Eli Manning could enter into unexpected competition

Michael Strahan and Eli Manning banded together to pull off one of the greatest upsets in NFL history during their playing career, but it sounds like the two former New York Giants stars are now on opposite teams.

Strahan is planning to team up with billionaire Marc Lasry to submit a bid for a minority stake in the Giants, according to a report from Sportico. Giants owners John Mara and Steve Tisch are aiming to sell roughly 10% of the team, and Strahan has interest in becoming part of the ownership group.

So does Manning.

Last week, Bloomberg reported that Manning wants to submit a bid to become a part-owner of the Giants and has spoken with individual investors, including some former NFL players. The two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback is said to have had “preliminary conversations” about joining Strahan’s investment group, but it sounds like Manning and Strahan could instead wind up competing to submit the winning bid.

Manning and Strahan were teammates on the 2007 Giants team that spoiled the New England Patriots’ perfect season.

The Giants are estimated to be worth around $8 billion, which means a 10% stake would cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $800 million. We know of at least one other high-profile sports figure who also wants to get involved.

While both Manning and Strahan are very wealthy, neither has the type of money it would take to come up with an $800 million bid unless they attached themselves to other investors. As of now, they do not seem to have interest in linking up with each other, though that could change at some point.
