Mike McDaniel knows a fantasy football question when he hears one.
The new Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator tackled some questions from the media on Monday, including one that he detected as having a strong hint of fantasy football, particularly concerning the usage of the team’s running backs.
“This feels super fantasy motivated,” McDaniels responded to a question about whether running back Omarion Hampton would be Los Angeles’ “workhorse.”
“There’s good news and bad news, fantasy owners,” McDaniel continued. “Good news, I see all three of those guys producing at a very high level. Bad news is, I can’t tell you which games those are.”
Apart from Hampton, the Chargers’ running backs room also features Keaton Mitchell and Kimani Vidal, who are both solid options on the ground but are widely regarded as being behind Hampton in the team’s RB pecking order.
McDaniel did not guarantee bell-cow treatment for Hampton and probably left fantasy managers and Chargers fans with more questions after leaving the door open about how the team’s running back touches will be distributed.
“I think there’s going to be an opportunity for him to have a ton of touches,” McDaniel added, referring to Hampton.
“Specifically, I’ll use three of those guys probably every game. The relative ratio will be based on opponent and what we’re asking the guys to do.”
Vidal led the Chargers with 643 rushing yards to go with 3 touchdowns on 155 carries last season, but Hampton, then a rookie, was not far behind with 545 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns on 124 touches in the rushing attack.
