MItch Unrein wife Corey Cogdell wins bronze medal in trap shooting
Corey Cogdell-Unrein, the wife of Chicago Bears defensive end Mitch Unrein, took home a bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in Rio over the weekend.
Cogdell-Unrein became a bronze medalist in women’s trap shooting after she competed for the honor with Spain’s Fatima Galvez. Both shooters finished the 15-target round with 13 each, and Cogdell-Unrein went on to best Galvez in a shoot-off.
The medal was Cogdell-Unrein’s second bronze, as she is competing in her third Olympic Games. Her first bronze came in Beijing back in 2008.
As Tim Bannon of The Chicago Tribune notes, Corey and Mitch met on a blind date the day before the Super Bowl in 2011. They enjoy hunting together, but the NFL lineman said he is blown away by how accurate his wife’s shooting is.
“I am pretty proficient,” Unrein said. “I can’t even put it into words (how his wife shoots). You go out there and watch the Olympic shooters, and you’re like, ‘Oh, I can do that.’ Then you step on the line with the shotgun in your hand, and you call for the target. It is so fast. Normal American trap goes 35 to 40 mph. When they shoot, the angles are more severe, and they go 60 to 80 mph.”
Unrein, who is currently at training camp with the Bears, was unable to travel to Rio to watch his wife compete. He is not the first NFL player to have a wife who competed in the Olympics, as a former Jacksonville Jaguars player once skipped some offseason workouts to watch his wife compete in track and field.
