Report: Myles Garrett facing lengthy suspension, could be five games

Myles Garrett Mason Rudolph

Myles Garrett was guilty of one of the most aggressive and dangerous acts we have ever seen on a football field during Thursday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns, and all indications are that the star defensive end is going to miss several games because of it.

Garrett, who ripped Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph’s helmet off and bashed him in the head with it, is facing a lengthy suspension. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media said the NFL may view the situation as comparable to when Albert Haynesworth stomped on an opponent’s head back in 2006, which resulted in a five-game suspension. That was the longest suspension in league history for a single act of on-field behavior.

Garrett has a cleaner record than Haynesworth had at the time of his incident, so the NFL could take that into consideration. However, it’s worth noting that the Browns have six games left in their season, so it would not be a surprise if Garrett is suspended for the remainder of the year.

The situation could have been a lot worse, as fortunately Rudolph did not suffer a serious injury. Many are calling for Garrett to be charged with assault for the act, but that seems unlikely to happen. Either way, even his own teammates refused to come to his defense immediately after the game, and Garrett acknowledged that he made a mistake. That mistake could cost him the rest of the 2019 season.
