Nick Bosa Instagram account at center of manufactured controversy

Nick Bosa

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Nick Bosa has seen his social media end up in the spotlight again in the leadup to the Super Bowl.

During the week, an Instagram account that Bosa followed was posting insensitive memes after the death of Kobe Bryant, and some commentators took note and argued that it was a reflection on Bosa’s character that he did so.

To be clear, Bosa’s social media activity is fair game. In the past, the defensive lineman has been an outspoken supporter of President Trump, and he has acknowledged insensitive activity in terms of things he has said and liked on his accounts prior to being drafted by the 49ers. Liking something on Twitter or Instagram is, at least typically, an intentional act that says something about what a person agrees with or finds funny, and may reveal some things about their character.

This, however, is not that. Unless Bosa is going around liking or sharing content like this, it’s not really fair to judge him or hold him accountable for it. If he’s actively engaging with it and seems to approve of it, that’s another issue entirely, but it does not seem that happened here.
