Report: Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson could land huge contracts after season

Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson are set to do battle in what could be a shootout at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, and the two quarterbacks could be going head-to-head after the season as well.

Both Mahomes and Watson — who were drafted in 2017 — will be eligible to sign contract extensions this offseason. The Chiefs are expected to offer Mahomes a record-breaking deal, and Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported on Sunday that Watson could wait for that before asking the Texans to beat it.

While Mahomes has already won an MVP award and has had a better NFL career than Watson to this point, that is how the quarterback market works — just ask a guy like Jared Goff. With some of the massive contracts we have seen given to quarterbacks over the past two years, it’s no wonder the numbers being thrown around for Mahomes’ extension are absurd. If he signs before Watson, Watson can expect to get the same deal or slightly higher.

Both Watson and Mahomes had better seasons in 2018 than they had this year, but there’s a reason their teams are in the Divisional Round of the playoff. They’re two franchise quarterbacks who are the future of the NFL. Expect them to be paid accordingly as soon as possible.
