Pittsburgh Steelers fans used by far more profanity on Facebook than other NFL fans

Pittsburgh Steelers fans are a potty-mouthed group of people, one new study suggests.

ProofPoint says they analyzed the social media activity of some NFL fans on Facebook leading up to the Super Bowl. Their study was done by analyzing “the content posted to the Facebook pages of the twelve NFL playoff teams during the first three weeks of January leading up to the NFL Conference title games.”

Keep in mind these stats only involve the fans of 12 of the 32 NFL teams, though one aspect is pretty notable.

The Dallas Cowboys had the greatest amount of Facebook comments among teams in the playoffs, followed by the Packers and Patriots. But the real interesting stat came when they analyzed the profanity content of the comments. According to their study, Steelers fans blew everyone out of the water with their profanity.

Here is how profanity was determined:

In order to assess this risk, we analyzed the relative “profanity” of our playoff group by looking at the percentage of inappropriate content, which is mostly profanity but also includes hate speech, bullying, pornography, and other ‘negative’ language. (Table 3) The runaway leader in the Profanity category is the Pittsburgh Steelers, with inappropriate comments representing more than 6.1% of all comments. The nearest competitor in the Profanity category was their division rival Baltimore Ravens, with inappropriate comments representing 1.6% of all comments.

So Steelers fans had profanity in 6.1 percent of their Facebook comments, the Ravens were next at 1.6 percent, and the Patriots were third among playoff teams at 1.13 percent. Every other team’s fans used profanity in Facebook comments 1 percent of the time or less. Panthers and Broncos fans were the cleanest at 0.32 percent.

You’re a bunch of foul-mouthed hooligans, Pittsburgh fans! Steelers fans definitely are among the most passionate, but now they have two unofficial honors: they curse the most, and they have the worst tattoos.
