Things got testy on NBC’s Super Bowl LX pregame show Sunday when Rodney Harrison confronted Tony Dungy over Bill Belichick’s omission from the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Dungy, a Hall of Fame voter, refused to disclose how he voted in the balloting, but said the voters themselves should not be blamed for Belichick’s failure to make it on the first ballot. He instead blamed the format of the voting, which limits how many candidates can be voted for in each category.
Harrison did not seem to buy the explanation, and took the Hall of Fame voters, and Dungy by association, to task.
“Any list that doesn’t include Bill Belichick at the top is absolutely wrong,” Harrison said. “I played with Drew Brees. I played with Adam Vinatieri. But there’s nobody more deserving to be in that Hall of Fame than Coach Belichick. I’ve seen his greatness. I’ve seen him design defenses to stop your offense. Just look at the players that he’s impacted. Even a guy like Tom Brady — Tom Brady wouldn’t be Tom Brady without Bill Belichick. That’s the disappointing part of it, coach, and you guys got it wrong.”

Dungy was clearly trying to be diplomatic about the snub, but Harrison was not in the mood. He spent six seasons playing for Belichick in New England, and clearly feels very strongly about his former coach getting in as quickly as possible.
It is entirely possible that Dungy’s explanation is partly correct, and the system is to blame. Ultimately, though, that explanation will be insufficient for most people, especially since some of Belichick’s former players are taking it very personally that he was excluded on the first ballot.
