The New England Patriots might not be the only team hiring a former NFL player as their next head coach.
Dan Graziano of ESPN reported Tuesday that New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has emerged as a legitimate option to be the next head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Graziano adds that the Seahawks have already interviewed Kafka twice.
Kafka used to be a journeyman quarterback in the NFL. He was a fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2010 and spent time with seven different teams (though mainly as a practice squad member). Kafka’s first NFL coaching stint came on the Kansas City Chiefs from 2017-21 (including as the QBs coach for their Super Bowl LIV win in the 2019 season). He then joined the Giants as the offensive coordinator prior to the 2022 campaign.
Still only 36 years old, Kafka has already received head coaching intrigue and was a finalist for another job in the NFC around this time last year. It appears that one other coach is still favored overall to succeed Pete Carroll as Seattle head coach. But Kafka may quickly be gaining ground in the race.
