The NFL coaching carousel apparently never fails to disrupt the McVay family’s annual vacation.
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay had his coaching staff pillaged once again just a week before the end of the 2025 season. Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur on Sunday got poached by the Arizona Cardinals, who offered him their vacant head coaching job.
While speaking to reporters on Monday, McVay was asked about losing yet another of his coaches to the head coaching cycle.
“We’ve got a lot of great coaches in-house, and our job is to continuously build,” McVay said on the Rams coaching staff’s high turnover. “It’s like putting together a team, your coaching staff, and we’ve had a lot of reps at it for a lot of the right reasons.
“It never fails. Every time me and my wife and I go on vacation, someone is usually getting a head coach job, and then I’m spending too much time on my phone.”
McVay added that he’s still “excited to dive into” the search for his next offensive coordinator, a role that has become a proven stepping stone for any aspiring head coaches.
The Rams have had four offensive coordinators since McVay became head coach in 2017; all of them are currently head coaches. Mike’s brother, Matt LaFleur, was hired by the Green Bay Packers a year after serving under McVay. Kevin O’Connell took the role next, followed by Liam Coen. Both are now highly-regarded NFC head coaches.
Mike LaFleur spent three seasons as the Rams’ OC — the longest in the McVay era. Mr. and Mrs. McVay finally got a quiet vacation last year, but that peace was never going to last too long.
