Shedeur Sanders had an honest quote after his preseason interception

Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders looks on during a game.

Shedeur Sanders is standing by his decision-making after a blunder he made in Saturday’s preseason game between the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill.

On a third-and-8 play with under 14 minutes left in the fourth quarter, the former Colorado Buffaloes star quarterback tried to find wide receiver Malachi Corley downfield, but his pass ended up being intercepted by Bears defensive back Beanie Bishop.

Still, Sanders thinks he made the right decision and simply botched the execution.

“What I see, the right read, it just slipped, you know, it’s the right read, it just slipped,” Sanders said in a press conference after the game, via Camryn Justice of News 5 Cleveland. So that’s what makes me mad a little bit because of it. Any decision I make, I know it’s the right decision. I just didn’t execute the decision, but the right decision was made.”

Sanders is in the middle of a quarterback battle against the more experienced Deshaun Watson, but his interception did not seem to affect his outlook.

“Obviously turning the ball over and all that stuff is not great, and it won’t survive a long time in the league doing that, but as long as my eyes and my feet and everything was in the right place, being able to execute it, it just may happen,” the 24-year-old Sanders added.

“So I look at the positive of things. I’m alive, I’m breathing. I’m able to come up here and talk to y’all. So, you know, I can’t be that down.”

Sanders threw for just 79 passing yards with zero touchdowns on 6/11 pass completions.

His performance and the turnover he committed did not help his case to be Cleveland’s Week 1 starter in the 2026 NFL season, but he will get chances to atone for his blunder in the coming weeks.

The Browns will next face the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 of the preseason and the New England Patriots in Week 3, both at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
