Steelers plan to use Justin Fields in 1 notable situation?
Justin Fields is likely going to enter the 2024 season as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ backup quarterback, but he might have an opportunity to score some touchdowns.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said on “SportsCenter” Sunday that rival teams expect the Steelers to design plays for Fields to run at the goal line.
“I’ve talked to multiple teams now who expect the Pittsburgh Steelers to get a little weird at the goal line with Justin Fields, maybe have a package or two for him ready to go where he can be a runner or a thrower out of the shotgun,” Fowler said, as transcribed by Scott Polacek of Bleacher Report.
Fowler also noted that new Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith used star running back Derrick Henry in a role like that at times when Smith was the OC of the Tennessee Titans a few years ago. With Fields’ speed, certain read-option plays could be very difficult to defend at the goal line.
Fields rushed for 1,800 yards and 12 touchdowns over the past two seasons with the Chicago Bears. Mike Tomlin is said to be a huge fan of the former Ohio State star, though the Steelers seem to have already decided on Wilson as their starting QB.
Fields recently shot down a rumor about him being used in a very surprising role next season, but it seems unlikely that he will ride the bench all year.
