Stephen Jones hints that Dak Prescott could win Cowboys QB job from Tony Romo

Dak Prescott

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones thinks that Tony Romo will be back under center for the team as soon as he’s able, but he left a tiny bit of room for a change in plans.

Jones told Peter King of the MMQB that if Prescott plays well enough, he could displace Romo — just as Tom Brady displaced Drew Bledsoe as Patriots quarterback fifteen years ago under similar circumstances.

“I can’t imagine a scenario where Tony’s not our quarterback when he’s ready,” Jones said. “But things happen. You know that. You know what happened to Bledsoe and Brady. I’m sure Tony’s aware of that. But the reality is, Tony’s going to come back for us and play great, we believe.”

Let’s be clear. The scenario is exceptionally unlikely, and nobody is saying Prescott is the second coming of Brady. Still, it’s interesting that they’re leaving the door open. The Cowboys have always wanted a succession plan in place, but it’s safe to say this would happen a lot faster than they likely intended it to.
