Steve Young had great line about 49ers drafting Jim Druckenmiller
Steve Young offered a great line when talking about Jim Druckenmiller on Thursday.
Young appeared as a guest on NFL Network’s schedule release show, talking with his former coach with the 49ers, Steve Mariucci. Mariucci asked Young to offer some thoughts on how an established quarterback can respond when his team drafts a possible replacement in the first round. That is what happened to Young in 1997 when San Francisco took Druckenmiller No. 26 overall.
“I went out the first practice and I watched Jim throw and I was like ‘I’m fine. We’re good, we’re good,'” Young joked.
Druckenmiller only appeared in six games in his career and threw just 52 passes for 239 yards, a touchdown and four interceptions. That’s it.
Mariucci brought up the Druckenmiller matter in comparison to what Aaron Rodgers is going through. Green Bay traded up to draft Jordan Love at No. 26 overall in this year’s draft.
Young views that as a different situation and feels it should motivate Rodgers as long as the competition results in creative tension rather than toxic tension. Brett Favre though has a different view of the situation.
