Steve Young rips Jay Cutler for not getting better with good coaches

Jay Cutler Bears

The Chicago Bears have gone through three head coaches in the last three years, and Steve Young believes Jay Cutler has a lot to do with that.

In an appearance on WGN Morning News on Thursday, Young ripped Cutler for not being able to improve despite playing under some great quarterback coaches.

“He’s run through some of the best coaches I’ve ever been around including Mike Shanahan and Marc Trestman, who are quarterback gurus. To me, if you’re any good, you’re going to get a lot better around those guys,” the Hall of Famer said, per Dan Cahill of the Chicago Sun-Times. “I didn’t see Jay get better … a little bit, but not as much as he should have. So, that’s hard for me. I think it reflects more on Jay than anything else.”

Perhaps the best chance Cutler had to revive his career was in 2013 and 2014, when the Bears were led by offensive genius Marc Trestman. Chicago finished 8-8 in Trestman’s first season and 5-11 last year. And, actually, they played better in 2013 when Cutler was injured and Josh McCown stepped in for him.

Cutler had his best season as a pro under Shanahan with the Denver Broncos in 2008. Even still, he threw 18 interceptions compared to 25 touchdowns. He has always struggled to protect the ball, which is a result of both poor decision making and stubbornness.

As soon as even crummy actors starting blasting Cutler, we knew he was in trouble. At age 32 and playing for a veteran coach in John Fox, this may be Cutler’s last real chance to prove he can win in the NFL. We wouldn’t count on it.
