Thurman Thomas warns LeSean McCoy to not get caught up in Chip Kelly stuff
LeSean McCoy might be looking forward to Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles more than he has any other game in his career, but arguably the best running back in Buffalo Bills history has some advice for him — don’t get too caught up in the drama.
Shortly after McCoy offered some of his strongest quotes yet about Eagles coach Chip Kelly, Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas cautioned McCoy about getting too emotional.
“Obviously, going back to where he grew up is going to be a big, emotional day for him,” Thomas said, according to ESPN.com’s Mike Rodak. “But I told him today, I said, ‘You know what? The last time that the Bills and former players were emotionally high, was the New England game [which Buffalo lost 40-32 in Week 2], and we can’t allow ourselves to do that.
“You can’t allow yourself to get caught up into what’s going to be happening with the game. Especially with the crowd, and Chip, and all that. You have to go out and keep doing what you’ve been doing the past four or five weeks and you’ll be fine.'”
Thomas added that he expects a “big game” out of McCoy, half-jokingly predicting that he will rush for over 200 yards.
One thing is for sure — motivation will not be an issue for either side. McCoy has said plenty about Kelly this week, sticking by the comments he made in which he accused Kelly of being racist and then cursing when Kelly said he would love to shake LeSean’s hand. Kelly is taking the high road, but you know he would love to erase McCoy.
Thomas’ advice to McCoy is basically a toned-down version of the epic rant we saw from Herm Edwards on Wednesday. There is still a football game to be played. McCoy’s feud with Kelly shouldn’t be bigger than the game.
