The Tennessee Titans have hired their next head coach.
While fans were engrossed in the College Football Playoff national championship game on Monday night, news broke that the Titans had hired Robert Saleh as their next head coach.
Saleh would be getting a second opportunity to serve as a head coach. Nearly 47 years old, Saleh coached the Jets from 2021-2024 and went 20-36 over four seasons. He was fired after going 2-3 to start the 2024 campaign. The Jets finished out that season going 3-9 without him, and they were 3-14 this season under Aaron Glenn.
After being fired by the Jets, Saleh worked for the Packers in 2024. He returned to the San Francisco 49ers and served as their defensive coordinator this season. He had previously worked as their defensive coordinator from 2017-2020 prior to getting the Jets job. The 49ers were 13th in points allowed and 20th in yards allowed this season.
What’s interesting is that Tennessee is hiring a defensive-oriented head coach despite having a young quarterback they need to develop in Cam Ward. But the team apparently is convinced that Saleh is right for the job — especially after John Harbaugh (Giants) and Kevin Stefanski (Falcons) chose to work elsewhere.
