Bruce Arians’ retirement decision was so abrupt that even the man replacing him was caught off-guard by the announcement.
Todd Bowles, who was promoted from his role as defensive coordinator to replace Arians as Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, admitted he had not known how to react when he initially got word of Arians’ plans.
“I was initially shocked when he told me on Monday. I thought something was wrong,” Bowles told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “The more I got to talking to Bruce, the more I know it was something he wanted to do, and credit to him. Once I knew he was fine and at peace with the decision and he got to do everything he wants to do, I was more than happy to take over for him.”

Arians’ decision certainly came out of nowhere to those inside the building. The fact that Bowles initially thought something was wrong speaks to that. Had this been a less abrupt process, Bowles probably would have had some more advance knowledge if he was going to be the one taking over head coaching duties.
Arians has tried to make clear that his departure had nothing to do with Tom Brady’s return. The abruptness of it will just fuel the conspiracy theories, though.
