
It does not sound as if things are going terribly well for Christian Hackenberg in New York.
Jets coach Todd Bowles has benched the rookie for the team’s first two preseason games, and he isn’t saying why.
“Coach’s decision,” Bowles said when asked, via Darryl Slater of NJ.com. It was an adage he repeated with each further question, though he emphasized that Hackenberg wasn’t facing discipline of any sort.

Hackenberg has received reps in practice, but he’s clearly falling behind in the race for a roster spot. Bryce Petty impressed in his time on the field, and he hasn’t done anything to warrant a demotion below Hackenberg. The Penn State rookie hasn’t really been impressive all offseason, and depending on what the Jets do with Geno Smith, Hackenberg seems destined for third string at best.
