Atlanta Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is suddenly facing an injury concern just days before the team starts its NFL season.
Tagovailoa experienced apparent back discomfort during the open portion of Thursday’s practice, according to Marc Raimondi of ESPN. He largely did not participate in the remaining part of the practice that was open to the media.
During the open media portion of practice, #Falcons QB Tua Tagovailoa touched his back and sat down on the grass briefly during individual drills Thursday. It was unclear exactly what had happened. He didn’t seem to throw again after, but media only gets to watch a small portion…

Tagovailoa’s situation is concerning for several reasons. Recurring back spasms limited him early in training camp, and the fact that the issue once again centers around his back has to be a concern for the Falcons.
Tagovailoa will start for Atlanta in Week 1, but his grip on the starting job does not appear to be terribly firm. Michael Penix Jr. was not physically ready to start the season, but when that changes, he could become the starter unless Tagovailoa performs very well. For now, Cooper Rush is Tagovailoa’s healthy backup, and would get the call Sunday in Pittsburgh if Tagovailoa is unable to go.
Atlanta signed the former first-round pick to a 1-year, $1.215 million contract in March. Last season, he passed for 2,660 yards and 20 touchdowns against 15 interceptions in 14 games.
