Tua Tagovailoa did not get the warmest of receptions in his return to Hard Rock Stadium.
The Atlanta Falcons quarterback was heavily booed Friday in his team’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins in Miami Gardens, Fla. The venue was far from packed, but the fans in attendance were loud enough to make their feelings about Tua known.

Tagovailoa was effective during his limited time on the field. He went 7/8 for 95 yards in a 17-12 win for the Falcons. After the game, he was asked if he had heard the boos and bared his emotions about the bitter moment.
“Well, of course I did,” Tagovailoa said, via Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio. “But, you know, needless to say, like, being able to come back here, like, I’ve had six years here, and those are probably some of the best six years of my life, being able to, you know, play for Miami, being able to be in front of the crowd.
“You know, I mean, [I] had a Pro Bowl here, like, had a good amount of accolades. So, regardless of the reaction, like, I mean, I love the city. We have a home out here. Like, we still have our house and whatnot. But, I mean, it is what it is. You know, I can’t change any of what they did and whatnot, but, you know, it was really cool to see a lot of the guys after the game, and then, you know, talk to some of the guys during the game. So it was a cool homecoming, if you will.”
Tagovailoa never developed into the consistent franchise quarterback the Dolphins were hoping for when they drafted him fifth overall in 2020. But he did have a few productive seasons in Miami.
Most notable was Tua’s 2023 campaign, when he earned a Pro Bowl nod after throwing for a league-leading 4,624 yards with 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. But even during his banner year, Tagovailoa left Dolphins fans disheartened with a lackluster playoff performance in a loss against the Kansas City Chiefs — his lone postseason appearance in six seasons.
Tagovailoa arguably brought Dolphins fans more anxiety than elation over the years. The Alabama alum’s six-year run was marred by several terrifying head injuries that had many questioning whether he should retire early.
For now, the man is persevering through both the injuries and the boos.
