Von Miller had no idea Super Bowl 50 helmet was missing

The man who stole two of Tom Brady’s game-worn Super Bowl jerseys also made off with Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller’s helmet in between, but the Denver Broncos linebacker never reported it missing.

That’s because he didn’t know it was gone.

“Honestly, I didn’t even know my helmet was missing,” Miller told reporters on Tuesday, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “That’s how crazy last year was. We had the best of the best and the finest investigators on the whole ordeal. They were able to find Tom [Brady’s] jerseys and they were able to find my helmet as well. Hats off to those guys.”

A fascinating story from Jenny Vrentas and Robert Klemko of The MMQB this week provided details about how authorities tracked down Brady’s jerseys and Miller’s helmet, which had been stolen by former Mexican newspaper director Mauricio Ortega. When Mexican law enforcement officials went to Ortega’s house and he turned over Brady’s jerseys, they asked if he had anything else he needed to give up. Ortega reportedly then placed a phone call to a friend, who came to his home with Miller’s helmet and gave it to police.

Because he made it back to Mexico with Brady’s stolen jersey, Ortega is unlikely to face any serious legal consequences. You can read more about that here.

Miller may not have known his helmet had been stolen, but he must be happy to have it back.
