Rory McIlroy shut down some heckling from American fans at the Ryder Cup on Saturday using both his voice and his play.
McIlroy was left frustrated by heckling as he prepared for his approach shot on the 16th hole at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y. As McIlroy was preparing for his shot, one American fan could be heard yelling “freedom!” in an apparent attempt to throw him off.
McIlroy did not let that pass. He could be heard turning to the gallery and yelling at them to “shut the f— up.”

McIlroy backed it up by dropping his 149-yard shot within four feet of the pin, setting up a 3&2 match win with partner Tommy Fleetwood in foursomes.
After the match, McIlroy made it clear that he had no issue with fans heckling, but did not want it happening while he was taking a shot.
“In between shots, say whatever you want to me,” McIlroy said, via Paolo Uggetti of ESPN. “But just let us — you gave the us the respect to let us hit shots, and give us the same chance that the Americans have, I guess.”
Though it may seem out of character, McIlroy is used to being the villain during the Ryder Cup. He had plenty of nice things to say about the United States in the buildup to this year’s tournament, but that did not make him a crowd favorite, obviously.
Saturday’s win was McIlroy and Fleetwood’s second in as many days against Americans Harris English and Collin Morikawa. They helped Team Europe maintain a significant lead over the Americans on Saturday by going 3-1 in the morning session.
