Connor McDavid worries Oilers fans with comment about his future

Connor McDavid has only one year remaining on his contract with the Edmonton Oilers, and there has been some talk of him potentially leaving the franchise after coming up short yet again in the Stanley Cup Final. It does not sound like the three-time Hart Trophy winner has ruled that out.

McDavid was asked on Thursday if he feels he has “unfinished business” with the Oilers. He said “absolutely” and spoke about how much work Edmonton’s current core has put in while pursuing a championship.

There was one particular comment, however, that has Oilers fans feeling rather nervous.

“We’re holding this together, trying to get it over that finish line. With that being said, ultimately, I still need to do what’s best for me and my family and that’s who you have to take care of first,” McDavid said. “But of course there’s unfinished business here, yeah.”

McDavid is entering the final season of an 8-year, $100 million contract he signed with the Oilers in 2017. The former No. 1 overall pick just finished his 10th NHL season, and he is still chasing a Stanley Cup.

The Oilers’ second-best player, Leon Draisaitl, is set to begin the first year of an 8-year, $112 million extension he signed with Edmonton. That should work in the team’s favor when trying to re-sign McDavid, who becomes eligible for a new deal on July 1.

The New York Rangers have been mentioned as a potential suitor for McDavid if he is actually open to leaving Edmonton. Some doubt whether he would move on, but McDavid clearly wants to create the impression that he is considering it, at the very least.

After the Oilers lost to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final, Matthew Tkachuk praised McDavid and said he is confident McDavid will win a championship of his own someday. The way Tkachuk phrased his comment had some wondering if he was trolling Edmonton.
