Maples Leafs fan throws a jersey onto the ice

Toronto Maple Leafs fans on Sunday let their emotions get the best of them after watching their team get eliminated from the NHL postseason in embarrassing fashion.

The Maple Leafs were ripped to shreds by the Florida Panthers in Game 7 of their second-round series at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada. The Panthers scored three goals each in the second and third periods to secure a dominant 6-1 win.

Once the game’s result was virtually settled, the home fans began throwing Maple Leafs gear onto the ice. Jerseys and hats were sent flying in the final period. The first jersey was tossed at the 9:24 mark, shortly after a Sam Reinhart goal gave the Panthers a 5-1 lead.

Fans eventually grew even more disgruntled. One supporter even threw a soda can as the game neared its end.

The Panthers were the more aggressive team out of the gate. Florida fired up 25 shot attempts before Toronto could even muster one. The Maple Leafs miraculously kept the game scoreless after the first period. But the floodgates eventually burst open for the Panthers in the final two periods.

The Maple Leafs were once in firm control of the series. Toronto went up 2-0 and had an opportunity to make it 3-0 in overtime of Game 3. But all-time Leafs nemesis Brad Marchand changed the complexion of the series with his OT goal to get the Panthers their first win.

Florida went on to win three of the next four to end Toronto’s season for the second time in three years.
