Jon Jones on Saturday announced his retirement from MMA, and news also emerged that he is facing a new criminal charge.

UFC boss Dana White made the announcement about Jones, who followed with a statement.

“Today, I’m officially announcing my retirement from the UFC. This decision comes after a lot of reflection, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I’ve experienced over the years,” Jones wrote on his X profile.

The Albuquerque Journal cut into what otherwise would be a day of celebration for Jones by reporting about the criminal charge the MMA star is facing.

Jones has been called to appear in Metropolitan Court in Albuquerque, N.M., on July 24 due to a misdemeanor crime he is accused of committing in February. Jones is accused of leaving the scene of a car crash near San Mateo and Lomas. When police spoke to him via a phone call, they believed he sounded intoxicated. A woman who was in the front passenger seat of the car was said to have exhibited signs of intoxication and was lacking clothing from the waist down. She later told police she drank alcohol and consumed mushrooms at Jones’ house.

Jones, 37, retires with a record of 28-1 with one no contest. His only loss came due to a disqualification for elbow strikes. He has been both the UFC Lightweight and UFC Heavyweight champion. Jones also has had numerous legal issues, including a 2015 hit-and-run incident in Albuquerque for which he pleaded guilty.
