Gabby Douglas’ attempt to compete in the 2024 Olympics has come to an end.
Douglas withdrew from competing in the U.S. gymnastics championships at Fort Worth, Texas this weekend, ESPN reported on Wednesday. Douglas cited an ankle injury sustained during training this week as the reason for her withdrawal.
The 28-year-old Douglas won the gold medal in the team competition at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics for the United States. She also won gold in the All-Around at the 2012 Summer Games in London.
Douglas had taken an 8-year hiatus from gymnastics but was still trying to qualify for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris.
Douglas’ comeback attempt not going as she had hoped has not dismayed her. She told ESPN that she plans to attempt to qualify for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
“My plan is to continue to train for the L.A. 2028 Olympics,” Douglas told ESPN. “It would be such an honor to represent the U.S. at a home Olympics.”
