Malaysian diver finishes last after brutal belly flop (Video)

Ahmad Amsyar Azman belly flop

Malaysian diver Ahmad Amsyar Azman finished last in the preliminary round of the 3m springboard diving event at the Summer Games in Rio on Monday after completely botching his final dive.

Azman was attempting a forward 2.5 somersault 3 twist dive that had a difficulty of 3.9 in the sixth round. But he lost his balance and ended up doing a brutal belly flop into the pool.

The Malaysian was actually 12th with a score of 331.95 after five rounds, but that dive completely tanked his score. He finished with just 341.70 points, placing him 29th of 29.

“I knew then that it was over as there was no way for me to make the semi-final,” said a dejected Amsyar, via the New Strait Times. “I made a mistake when jumping and couldn’t control my dive after that.”

As tough as this may be for Azman, if he needs any inspiration, he should look to Stephan Feck. The German diver placed ninth and moved on to the semifinals at Rio. That’s pretty good when you recall that Feck had one of the most embarrassing dives at the London Olympics.

Azman should pick himself up and set his sights on Tokyo.
