Maroney’s family in on ‘McKayla is not impressed’ meme

The “McKayla is not impressed” meme that went viral last week on the Internet was so powerful that not only has the gold medal-winning gymnast embraced it, but apparently so has her family.

The 16-year-old posted the above photo to her Twitter account on Wednesday along with the note “Look what i came home to on my fire place.. hahaha”

The Internet went wild a few days after Maroney won the silver medal in the vault — an exercise in which she was expected to win gold. Maroney was so upset about finishing second that she had that dejected look on her face after receiving her medal. Folks on the ‘net found it hilarious and began photoshopping her image into many other contexts, leading to a highly amusing collection of pictures seen on this website.

We initially didn’t cover the story feeling that it was poor form to mock a 16-year-old girl for expressing her disappointment about failing on a world stage, capturing a particular face she made in a given second, and then running wild with it, but now that both she and her family seem to have embraced it, we don’t have any remorse.

It’s easy to get upset when everyone is having a laugh at your expense. It’s not easy to let it go and laugh along with the crowd. We give McKayla and her family a lot of credit for making the best of the situation.
