US gymnastics team to unveil nickname on Tuesday
Led by two-time London Olympic gold medalists Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman, the 2016 U.S. gymnastics team is a heavy favorite to dominate in Rio. In the past, dominant U.S. gymnastics teams have had clever nicknames associated with them.
So what about this one?
Raisman, Douglas, Simone Biles, Madison Kocian and Laurie Hernandez said in an interview with Ryan Seacrest before the Olympics began that they are planning to unveil their nickname before competition on Tuesday. Seacrest tried to get it out of the young ladies, but he was immediately stonewalled.
“We’re not telling,” Raisman said. “Nice try, though.”
In 2012, Raisman and Douglas were part of a team that became known as the “Fierce Five.” At the 1996 Summer Olympics, the “Magnificent Seven” was made up of Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu, Dominique Dawes, Kerri Strug, Amy Chow, Amanda Borden and Jaycie Phelps. The “Fierce Five” and the “Fab Five” are already taken, so this year’s team will have to be creative.
