FIFA’s Jack Warner accused of stealing from Haiti earthquake relief fund
As investigators work to sort through the alleged wrongdoings of FIFA, one name that has continuously been brought up is Jack Warner. The latest accusation against Warner, the former vice president of FIFA, is one of the most disturbing.
According to a report from the BBC, Warner has been investigated by U.S. prosecutors over the mysterious disappearance of $750,000 that was intended for Haiti earthquake victims. Warner is said to have visited Haiti in 2010 and raised the money from FIFA and the Korean Football Association.
The Guardian adds that Warner, who was one of 14 officials arrested on corruption charges last month, has said in the past that the allegations are bogus.
“I have nothing to answer to anybody,” Warner said in 2012. “Who wants to make allegations, make allegations.”
In 2012, the Trinidad & Tobago Football Federation claimed that $250,000 from FIFA and $500,000 from the South Korean FA was paid into an account that only Warner controlled. The money allegedly never made its way to Haiti earthquake relief efforts.
It has became clear in the past several weeks that everything is on the table when it comes to investigating the corruption within FIFA. Sepp Blatter likely decided to step down as FIFA president because he was being investigated by the FBI. Blatter’s resignation also came shortly after a report surfaced about his top lieutenant being accused of bribery. The situation is going to get much uglier before it improves.
