College FootballUrban Meyer

Urban Meyer has laughably switched opinions and now opposes a playoff

A four-team playoff to determine the national champion is likely coming to college football in the 2014 season, and Urban Meyer is not happy about the development.

“I’ll probably get in trouble for saying this, but I think the ideal setup is what we’ve had the last decade of football,” the Ohio State coach said on Wednesday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “I can understand why [the change] is happening, but I was not one of the screamers or yellers saying it was broke before.”

What’s funny is that Meyer was one of the yellers calling for a playoff system. Remember when he went nuts at the thought of a Michigan-Ohio State rematch national championship game in 2006?

“If that does happen, all the (university) presidents need to get together immediately and put together a playoff system,” Meyer said at the time. “I mean like now, January or whenever to get that done.

“I do believe as time wears on and you kind of sit back and look, that the only thing justifiable is to [add a playoff].”

That was Meyer in 2006 when his one-loss Florida team that eventually won the national championship was in jeopardy of being left out of the title game. And do you remember what he said about the BCS when he was the coach of Utah in 2004?

“Once again, it’s the big boys taking care of themselves. It’s not the coaches. It’s the commissioners and higher-ups looking out for themselves.”

About the only thing we’ve confirmed here is that Urban Meyer’s opinions are solely based on his agenda at the time. I guess that hardly makes him different from a politician.

Meyer also added something during his comments made on Wednesday that is sure to disturb SEC supporters.

“I’m not sure about having a brisk December game in Columbus and having a southern team come up and play,” Meyer said. “Southern teams I coached, that would have been a problem.”

Uh oh, SEC fans. Does this mean your conference might not be the best?
