Angels acquire David Murphy, David DeJesus in trades
The Angels are looking to beef up their outfield, and they have done so by acquiring three big leaguers in the days leading up to the trade deadline.
On Monday they acquired Shane Victorino in a trade with the Boston Red Sox. On Tuesday, they acquired David DeJesus from the Rays, and David Murphy from the Cleveland Indians. They sent minor league pitcher Eduar Lopez to Tampa Bay for DeJesus and Double-A shortstop Eric Stamets to the Indians for Murphy.
The Angels have lacked production from the left field spot all season. Matt Joyce is batting .178 and has been a horrible disappointment. Daniel Robertson is just a stopgap who lacks power.
Now with Murphy and Victorino in the mix, the Angels can run out an effective platoon. Murphy is hitting .297 with a .773 OPS against right-handed pitchers this season, while Victorino is hitting .343 with an .896 OPS against lefties.
DeJesus is another option at all outfield positions and is hitting .259 with a .658 OPS this season. He could see time in center field if Mike Trout’s wrist problems continue. He could also see action in left too.
