Jason Kidd busted for DWI after crashing into a telephone pole

As the Knicks sort through their Raymond Felton-Jeremy Lin mess, they have a new one on their hands. Newly signed Jason Kidd was popped with a drunken driving charge after the point guard crashed into a telephone pole in the Hamptons early Sunday morning, according to the Southampton police. Here’s the New York Daily News:

Kidd, 39, the only person in his 2010 Cadillac Escalade, was treated at for minor injuries following the single-car accident that occurred at 1:56 a.m. near Kidd’s summer home in the Hamptons, according to police. He was treated at Southampton Hospital, transferred to Southampton police station for processing, and then arraigned on a misdemeanor DWI charge, according to police.

Kidd signed with the Knicks on Thursday for three years, $9.5 million under the impression (along with the rest of us) that he would be backing up and mentoring Jeremy Lin, whom the Knicks were believed to be bringing back at any cost. But with the Knicks’ acquisition of Raymond Felton from the Blazers on Saturday, it appears they won’t be matching the Rockets’ offer sheet for Lin, whenever it comes.

So, Kidd went from mentoring one of the bright and potentially rising stars in this league to possibly carrying the load of an overweight and allegedly out-of-shape point guard who was a diva in Portland last season. I think we just figured out what drove Kidd to drinking.
