348-pound fullback David Fangupo commits to Hawaii

David FangupoWhile everyone was busy focusing on the heavily-hyped class Ole Miss signed last week, perhaps the most notable move of National Signing Day went overlooked: David Fangupo, a 348-pound fullback, committed to Hawaii.

Fangupo is 6-foot-2 and weighs 348 pounds, according to West Hawaii Today. He just completed his senior season for Kealakehe (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii) High School, which went 10-2 and won its third straight Big Island Interscholastic Federation title.

At 6-foot-2 and 348 pounds, you would think Fangupo is a lineman, and you would be partially correct; he played both offensive and defensive line before his senior season. But his coach reportedly saw his speed and athleticism, and installed him as a fullback for his senior season.

The results were tremendous — Fangupo rushed for 538 yards and 10 touchdowns on 74 carries, according to the paper (Max Preps says he scored six TDs). Max Preps says he also saw action as the team’s kicker and punter.

West Hawaii Today says Fangupo received full scholarship offers from BYU and Georgia Tech, and interest from Utah, but he hadn’t heard from Hawaii. That changed on National Signing Day when Hawaii coach Norm Chow gave him an offer that he accepted.

There is no word on what position Fangupo will play for Hawaii, but he is open to what his coach decides.

“Whatever helps the team is good for me,” Fangupo told the publication.

I think I know what position we’re all hoping they have him play, and it sure as heck isn’t lineman, unless he gets to do both like William “The Refrigerator” Perry.
